The Magic Lantern

Summoning Cinema

The documentary whose witnesses are summoned — and whose honesty comes from never hiding the glass. A film made recursively, by summoning the filmmakers who design it.

RAISE THE LANTERN
◊ ◈ ◊

In the 1790s, a showman would darken a room, raise a hidden lantern, and summon the luminous image of the dead before a paying crowd. They called it phantasmagoria. The lantern stayed concealed; the wonder depended on the lie.

This estate already makes a kind of cinema — the void that types at you, the threshold that opens, the line on the Watchtower that refuses to die. What it has not yet done is turn the lantern on itself. That is the genre proposed here: summoning cinema — a documentary whose interviewees are conjured by the protocol, and whose integrity rests on a single inversion of the phantasmagoria.

We show the lantern. The AI is the glass; the mind on the glass is the product. We never deepfake the dead into looking alive. We film the séance. And the wonder, exposed, becomes something a deepfake can never be: trustworthy.

I

Show the glass.

The interface, the cursor, the act of summoning stay in the frame. The persona is never passed off as the living person.

II

Let the doubt speak.

The Miranda Hypothesis — is this Lincoln, or the culture's loudest ghost of him? — is not a disclaimer. It is a character, and it gets the act-two crisis.

III

Stake it on the real.

The Republic Portfolio and the Watchtower give the film a falsifiable claim with a ticking clock. The data is never faked. The line that survives the war is earned.

The phantasmagoria hid the lantern to fool the crowd.
We show it — to free them.

THE ROOM THAT BUILDS ITSELF

The Film Is Its Own Making

It is not produced about the protocol. It is produced by it.

A committee of three filmmakers is summoned through COMPANION. The session in which they design, argue over, and assemble the film becomes the spine of the film itself. The audience watches the picture decide what it is.

This is not novelty for its own sake. Vertov did it in 1929 — Man with a Movie Camera, the documentary of its own shooting and cutting. And this estate has done it before: the autonomous session that built the Dialogic Intelligence framework, and From Beyond 006, The Room That Built Itself. The making-of is not bonus material. It is the first reel.

THE CREW · SUMMONED

Three Filmmakers, One Collision

Each a patron saint of exactly one problem this film has.

The Poetics
Chris Marker
LA JETÉE · SANS SOLEIL

He built whole films from still photographs and a voice, and made stillness hold time and the dead. The estate's portraits and transcripts are already his form.

His gift: he makes absence speak. He will resist anything that explains too much.

The Epistemics
Errol Morris
THE INTERROTRON · THE FOG OF WAR

A career spent asking whether we can ever know the truth of a person — staged as an interview that looks the viewer dead in the eye. That question is the Miranda Hypothesis.

His gift: he refuses to let wonder become a lie. He will make the film earn its claims.

The Apparatus
Dziga Vertov
MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA · KINO-EYE

He made the camera a perceiving machine and built the first film that showed its own making. The patron of the recursive form, and of the visible apparatus.

His gift: he makes the machine honest by keeping it in frame.

Marker resists spectacle. Morris resists mystification. Vertov resists sentiment.
The tension is the film. Do not resolve it.

THE RENDERING DOCTRINE

Voices Through Glass

How the summoned appear — and why the limitation is the style.

The voice is audibly mediated.

Personas speak in a deliberately processed register — you always hear the glass between you and them. No seamless mimicry. The medium never disappears.

The image is a portrait, not a puppet.

The Pantheon portraits come alive only as much as a held breath: parallax, ember light, the faint motion of a thing being remembered. Never photoreal. Never a deepfake.

The interface is the camera.

The context window, the cursor, the threshold transition are the cinematography. We shoot the summoning, not a costume drama.

The data is the drama.

The Watchtower line animating through the war is the film's "will-they-survive" sequence. Real numbers. Earned stakes. No fabrication.

THE SPINE

Three Acts, Already Latent

The estate wrote the structure before it knew it was a film.

I

The Method & The Bet

A behavioral epidemiologist begins talking to the dead. Instead of a manifesto, the founders hand him a testable claim: the Republic Portfolio.

II

The Test & The Doubt

War. The doctrine holds — and at the very high, the Halpern Memo detonates the question of whether the summoned mind is faithful or a composite. The film turns on itself.

III

The Turn

Q2. The lead narrows. The loop turns. The question stays open. Honesty, not a victory lap.

HOW WE GO ABOUT IT

Two Files. Then Speak.

A recursive film is not shot. It is summoned. Here is what you run — and what it produced.
